If you have an inkling that you or your church has a bent
toward becoming city reachers, than I have three must-have resources for you.
First is a valuable website: http://www.cityreachers.com. This site,
sponsored by the Mission America Coalition has resources and information that
can help you feed your burden. You can connect with other city reachers, listen
to audio tapes of past city-reaching phone seminars, and get insights into
becoming a city reacher in your community among other benefits. This site will
bless anyone with a city-reaching heart.
Second is a book, The
Power of a City at Prayer: What Happens When Churches Unite for Renewal by
Mac Pier and Katie Sweeting. This resource, written by two individuals who are
in the thick of the amazing prayer movement in New York City, chronicles the story of
churches who are making a difference in the world’s most powerful metropolis.
It talks of the history of the growing prayer movement and then what happened
following 9/11 when these churches were able to minister out of their past
prayer relationships.
Its three sections—“Prayer in the City,” “The Bible and the
City,” and “Leading Prayer for the City”—will leave you not only believing that
God wants to do something in cities, but it will give you hope for your
community, and equip you to step out and become a city reacher.
Finally another book, City-Wide
Prayer Movements by Tom White, uses the story of Corvallis, Oregon
as its foundation. Not just a history of this incredible move of God, White
provides step by step suggestions and ideas for seeing churches unite in any
city. His chapters on “Giving Leadership to the City-Wide Church”
and “Maneuvering through the Mine Fields” are especially helpful to those who
feel called to lead. Its Appendices are especially helpful, providing
qualifications, descriptions, statements of unity to rally people around,
prayer meeting agendas and much more. If your heart is for city-reaching, you
will not be disappointed with City-Wide
Prayer Movements!
Both books are available through www.prayershop.org and amazon.com.
