PRAYER FOR YOUR CHURCH
|
Lord, I lift up our Men’s Ministry to You. Use this ministry to build our men in their faith. Teach them to be in right relationship to You and each other, to love their wives sacrificially and to instruct their children with patience. Encourage them to hold each other accountable as they carry each other’s burdens. May they speak the truth in love to each other even when its hard. (Jude 1:20; Titus 2:2; 1 Tim. 5:1; Eph. 5:25, 6:4; Gal. 6:2; Eph. 4:15; Prov. 27:6)

Disciplines for the Inner Life
Bob Benson, Sr. and Michael Benson
$25
Reviewed By Rev. Jeff Noel
I
have told many people during my Prayer Seminars that if I were only
allowed two books, I would choose my Bible and Disciplines for the
Inner Life. Considering my love for books that is a very difficult
statement! However, it is sincere. There are many aspects that separate
this devotional from other very good and inspirational works, but two
features rise to the top.
My favorite aspect of this work is what Benson call’s, “Selections for Meditation.” This is why I could be satisfied with this book and forsake all others. Like many devotionals, Disciplines has a daily outline to follow. But in the midst of that outline lies a collection of writings that Benson has gleaned from the great writers throughout history. He pulls from a wide range of works and mines out the golden passages that relate to the topic you are exploring for the week. Each of these “snippets” (as I affectionately refer to them) becomes a library of thought for me. I find myself journaling, praying, searching Scripture or just simply meditating on the thoughts that are dredged out of my heart and flow from the Spirit in response to these writings. There are enough to fill a week’s worth of devotions and a year full of spiritual growth.
The second feature is simple but powerful. The devotional develops 52 topics and you live with one each week. Bolstered by related Scriptures, psalms and hymns the topic is assimilated into your heart as you explore new aspects of that discipline each day. I have been through this devotional many times over the years and I have never tire of the topics. They challenge me, comfort me, encourage me, and stimulate me to grow deeper in my love and knowledge of Jesus.
I encourage you to discover the rich blessings that await you in Disciplines for the Inner Life. Personally I believe it is the best kept secret in spiritual growth materials . . . especially for pastors and leaders. I don’t think it should be kept a secret any longer!
